Cavs sign Cameron Payne to 10 day contract

Cavs sign Cameron Payne to 10 day contract

As first reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Cavs have signed free agent point guard Cameron Payne to a 10-day contract. 

The Cavs later announced the signing, as well as the previously reported waiving of Patrick McCaw, in a press release.

Payne, 24, played with the Bulls earlier this season before being waived on Jan. 3. He was originally drafted No. 14 overall by the Thunder in the 2014 NBA Draft out of Murray State — . He is perhaps known for being Russell Westbrook’s pre-game dance partner when he was with the Thunder.

Before being let go by the Bulls, Payne was averaging 5.7 points and 2.7 assists per game. For his career, he’s averaging 5.8 points and 2.5 assists. 

Payne is a on 10-day deal is fine, especially since it seems as if the Cavs signed and waived McCaw to help facilitate him getting out restricted free agency. Matthew Dellavedova is hurt, Collin Sexton has struggled of late and there really isn’t any other player on the roster capable of running the point. Jordan Clarkson may bring up the ball, but what he does is not initiating the offense. 

What this isn’t — and why McCaw was a more interesting signing in a vacuum — is the Cavs signing a player that could become a potential piece in what is shaping up to be a long rebuild. Nothing in Cam Payne’s body of work suggests that he has the potential to be an NBA rotation player. He’s here to provide some depth for 10 days, and maybe longer if the Cavs sign him to another 10-day deal. That’s it.
